Aims and Scope

From 1934 on, the Regional Gestapo Headquarters throughout the entire German Reich had to report all political incidents of the previous 24 hours to Berlin. The purpose of these reports was to outline the mood, the political situation and security measures. This regulation was later applied to Austria, following its annexation.

In cooperation with the "Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance (DÖW)", Vienna, and the "Forschungs- und Dokumentationszentrum Kriegsverbrecherprozesse" at the Philipps-Universität Marburg, the daily reports of the Gestapo regional headquarters in Vienna are now published for the first time and thus available for historical research. For no other Gestapo regional headquarters is such a concentration of source material available.

Until the demise of the Nazi regime some 810 reports were sent from Vienna to the central headquarters in Berlin, regularly providing information falling under the following rubrics:

Left-wing opposition, such as the KPÖ (Austrian communist party) and other Marxist groups
National opposition ("Vaterländische Front")
Opposition (civil disobedience, recalcitrance, crimes of utterance, listening to foreign radio transmissions)
Catholic movement / political Catholicism
NSDAP and affiliations
Jews
The press
Sects
Economic issues
Other, such as forced labor ("prohibited contacts"), Poland ("migrant workers")

No less than 741 daily reports with approximately 5,795 pages have been analyzed for this edition. Some 70 reports are missing. The digital facsimiles can be searched both in full text and by using an index of names and subjects. In all, the database provides information about 16,000 men and women either arrested or being kept under surveillance by the Gestapo. The contents of this database can be searched separately or in combination with the contents of the National Socialism, Holocaust, Resistance and Exile 1933 – 1945 database.
