Aims and Scope
Through the research database German Literary Expressionism Online 151 journals, yearbooks, collections and anthologies from the early 20th century with 2,404 issues are now available in full text.
Not least among those aspects setting expressionism apart from other literary historical epochs, is the role played by its journals. As a medium, journals provided expressionist authors with their most important forum for literary, artistic, intellectual and political discourse. Each author wrote for one journal or another, some publishing their work exclusively in periodicals, anthologies and other collections.
In their early years, many of the most important literary figures of the 20th century made their first literary appearances in periodicals. They included Hugo Ball, Johannes R. Becher, Gottfried Benn, Georg Heym, Klabund, Else Lasker-Schüler, Georg Trakl and Franz Werfel. Authors, philosophers, theologians, politicians, historians, art historians, psychologists, and many others not belonging to the central circle of expressionists, also wrote for the new journals; such as Martin Buber, Gerhart Hauptmann, Theodor Heuss, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Gustav Landauer, Rainer Maria Rilke, Arthur Schnitzler.
Some journals, such as "Der Sturm", "Die Weissen Blätter", "Die Menschen" or "Die Dichtung", had strictly literary aspirations, whilst others exhibited a strong tendency toward political agitation, e.g. "Die Aktion". This variety makes these journals especially interesting as sources for a range of very different research objectives. The journals, yearbooks and anthologies of literary expressionism serve not only as sources on German literature of the Modern era, but can also be used for the study of the history of art, theatre, film, dance and music between 1910 and 1930, as well as European cultural transfer and the history of the reception of the German Classic and Romantic movements at the beginning of the 20th century. They are a unique body of contemporary historical evidence.
Through the new research database German Literary Expressionism Online this extensive and complex material is now available comprehensively. The individual journals, yearbooks, collections and anthologies, are presented online as facsimiles, with a variety of search possibilities providing easy access to the individual editions. The articles can be found using various search criteria or full-text searches, thus making it possible to work very effectively with the texts.
The database also contains bio-bibliographical articles on the 350 Expressionist authors as an additional consultation function. The edition is rounded off by a scholarly introduction.
